13 Oct Innovating education through the parent-teacher partnership
.
Synergy. Sounds elaborate and complicated, but it’s a beautiful, simple concept. As put by Dr Stephen R. Covey, synergy, the 6th habit in the Leader in me process “is better than my way, or your way. It’s our way.” And by “our”, we at Transylvania College mean parents and teachers – the most important role models in a child’s upbringing.
Synergy means cooperation and open-mindedness to provide the best for students. It is a bridge of communication built to assist the children in discovering the leaders within. The first human connection is that between the child and his parents. Teachers have the mission to guide each child’s journey, once they start attending school and it is not an easy mission.
When the two visions are understood and combined, we can honestly talk about a holistic approach to educate the student. Diane Levin, Ph.D., professor of education at Wheelock College, advises that “a positive parent-teacher relationship helps your child feel good about school and be successful in school. It demonstrates to your child that he can trust his teacher because you do. This positive relationship makes a child feel like the important people in his life are working together.”
It all starts at home, and it is essential for the child to have a consistent approach in the long term. In this regard, you may have a look at the principles and values that support a child’s development at Transylvania College, as part of the Leader in Me process. A comprehensive guide is available here.
Here are just a few ways in which parents at Transylvania College may become more involved in school:
- Staying updated through the weekly newsletters
- Attending conferences on Curriculum and Policies
- Attending events dedicated to parents, such as parenting conferences
- Scheduling individual meetings with the form tutor or specialist teachers
- Attending ‘Open Days’, where parents have the opportunity to observe how various subjects are taught
- Attending individual meetings with the Wellbeing team of counsellors, to support the child’s development
- Volunteering in various departments and/or projects
Teachers continue the parents’ work of helping each child discover and reach his or her potential. The healthiest way of doing so is by working together, synergising.
