11 Jan The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

I read Stephen Coveys’ book ‘’The 7 Habit of Highly Effective People’’ last year. The boys brought home from the library the children version and we started to read the stories together.

Why do I think the Leader in me programme is good not only for the school where my children learn, but also for our family?

Because it is a transformation process. It teaches 21st century life skills to children and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader.

When you think about our own school experience this program brings a total opposite approach. Instead of seeing children through the lens of a normal distribution curve —some kids are smart and some less smart —The Leader in Me paradigm sees that every child is capable and every child is a leader. This paradigm changes everything. This week, Matei (8) has talked in class about the fact that each of his colleagues has a talent and is the best at something, including his teacher. If one is the best in reading, other is the best in running, or mathematics, and Mr. is the funniest in his opinion.

Then, we as adults, and parents, must be the first to embrace the habits. We can’t expect changes in our children until we have changed ourselves. The model is just as much about the adults as it is the children. David (6) told me that he knows from school that when you see a bad behaviour, the solution is not to copy it too but to stop and chose a different way to react.

The 7 Habits create that common language for students, parents and teachers. I love when Matei (8) gets home and tells me,  “Mum, I need to put first things first and do my homework before I play”.

For me The Leader in me is not an event or a curriculum; it is part of our daily life, everywhere and all the time. (https://theleaderinmeonline.org)
